Participants in this year’s Sunflower Girls State, to be held on the University of Kansas campus June 5-10, may earn an hour of academic credit from KU. The course, "Madam President! Women as Political Leaders" (LA&S 292), will place the contemporary role of women in politics and government within the larger historical context of women’s campaigns for suffrage and the right to be a part of government. It will also examine the contemporary role of women in politics—as political candidates and political leaders.
In addition to readings and discussion, Girls State participants who enroll in this course will keep a journal that helps them apply the concepts that they have learned to the week’s activities. After Girls State, they will also research and prepare a paper on a female political leader or a topic dealing with women and politics.
The course instructor is Mary Banwart, assistant professor of communication studies at KU and coauthor of Gender and Political Candidate Communication: VideoStyle, WebStyle and NewsStyle.
Participants may enroll on the first day of Girls State or by visiting the Sunflower Girls State website, www.ksgirlsstate.org.
