February 23, 2009 (LAWRENCE, Kan.) • Jim Peters, Director of Professional Programs and Communications for University of Kansas Continuing Education, will speak about and sign his new book "Arlington National Cemetery: Shrine to America's Heroes", Third Edition from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 5th at Oread Books on level two of the Kansas Union at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. The event is free, and the public is invited.
"Arlington National Cemetery: Shrine to America's Heroes", Third Edition, (Woodbine House), was released in December 2008. Originally published in 1986, the book is the definitive guidebook to our most treasured national shrine, from its inception and development to its present glory. Written in close cooperation with cemetery staff, The National Park Service, and Arlington House, the book explores every corner of Arlington with its 300,000 honored dead and more than 40 monuments and memorials. It retraces the lives of both the famous: admirals, generals, presidents, Supreme Court justices, and astronauts; as well as those not so famous: enlisted men, nurses, and unknown slaves. The new edition reflects recent events and offers new material on people such as Chief Justice William Rehnquist, the Tuskegee Airmen, Iraqi war casualties, and the Columbia Shuttle astronauts. New content features monuments such as the September 11 Memorial, Air Force Memorial, 3rd Infantry and 4th Infantry Memorials, and many trees designated as living monuments. New photos feature new memorials such as the Correspondents Memorial and Columbarium as well as updated maps, burial regulations, and religious symbols. "Peters has done a terrific service to both eastern travelers and history buffs with this welcome recounting of the origins and growth of Arlington National Cemetery ... An engrossing account ... Fascinating appended material."
