On this tour you will visit a rotary kiln hazardous waste incinerator operated by 3M at its site in Cottage Grove, Minn. near the Twin Cities. In 2000, the facility completed a number of improvements to boost compliance with emissions limitations established in the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) regulations for hazardous waste combustors (MACT standard). You will tour the facility’s material handling, combustion and air pollution control installations. The tour also will include a presentation on 3M’s U.S. waste management program and its strategy for MACT compliance.

Tour the Hennepin Energy Resource Center (HERC) Energy-From-Waste Facility. Operated by Covanta Hennepin Energy Resource Co. for Hennepin County, this facility processes an average of 1,000 tons of solid waste daily and generates 33.7 megawatts of renewable energy—enough for 30,000 homes. You’ll receive an overview of the county’s integrated waste management system and learn about the Energy-From-Waste process. You also will visit the tipping floor where nearly 300 trucks per day deliver solid waste, watch as the waste is fed into two combustion units and visit the control room. This tour lasts 90 minutes and is limited to 25 people. Each attendee must wear a long-sleeve shirt, long pants and close-toe sh oes.

MPC invites you to tour its Eagan, Minn. headquarters. With rapid advances in consumer technology and today’s must-have, fast-paced consumer culture, personal computers and other tech toys now have a shelf life of no more than a few years. E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world today. MPC has been in the business of e-waste for more than two decades working with clients of all sizes to provide services in the reuse, recycling and remarketing of electronic equipment and components. This tour will provide an overall presentation of the electronics recycling process from beginning to end.

NiCo is a full-service, metal-finishing facility offering mechanical, chemical and electrolytic coatings and services. The 85,000-square-foot facility has four automated zinc plating lines, state-of-the-art robotic polishing capabilities and other plating lines for copper, nickel, tin, passivation, phosphate and decorative chrome. The facility also has a state-of-the-art, in-house waste treatment operation that treats effluents and sends the byproducts through a press and drying system before disposal and an advanced air-treatment system to keep the air clean for employees and the surrounding community. During this to ur, you will see firsthand how the plating and waste-treatment process works and how the facility complies with a multitude of regulations.
