This course will provide participants with the knowledge required to successfully operate elevators during emergency conditions as well as how to rescue trapped occupants when no elevator service person is available. Both hydraulic and traction elevators construction, mechanical equipment and electrical controls will be covered. Participants will understand the safety of blind shafts during fire operations but also their perils when performing entrapment rescue. Topics will include built-in safety features and how to recognize them, tools needed for rescue and how to use them, rescuers’ needs and what can be expected from elevator service companies, and what to expect from occupant behavior.

Clyde T. Pfisterer was the high rise program manager and a battalion chief with the Indianapolis Fire Department, where he served for more than 45 years. Before attaining the rank of B/C, his assignments had been on every type of apparatus and in all divisions of the department, while advancing in each permanent rank from chauffeur to battalion chief. Chief Pfisterer was a founding member of the Indianapolis Fire Department Arson Squad. He developed theHigh Rise Operations Guide for Metro Indianapolis after becoming the high rise program chief and now teaches the high rise course for the National Fire Academy as an adjunct instructor. His knowledge of buildings and their products is extensive, due to owning and operating a general contracting business, since becoming a professional firefighter. He has a fire science degree and has obtained a wide group of educational certifications through the state, NFA, IFSAC, DOD and internationally, including certification as a course developer and instructor. He has obtained training from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in emergency evacuation of passengers from elevators and was a contributor to the development of the National Fire Academy class, Fire Protection Systems for Emergency Operations. He is a member of the Indiana Fire Instructors Association and is an adjunct instructor at the National Fire Academy in 21 class listings. He has presented programs throughout the United States and in Bahrain. His development and presentation of training and incident action plans for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Incident Managers, won the NASCAR award for emergency preparedness in 2007.
