February 13, 2010Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy, 2025 East Iron Ave., Salina, Kan.

Fireground Strategies: The Dangers of Common Fireground Operations

This course covers common operational safety issues related to building search, both basic and the "get out fast" situation, and searching above the fire and V.E.S. operations. Also covers assessing smoke conditions and dangers of cornices and shafts. The class addresses the viewpoints of the incident commander as well as interior firefighters and officers in regard to both injury and disorientation prevention during common operations.

Fireground Strategies: Operational Safety

This course is aimed at developing an organization to support and maintain fireground safety. Discussed are the 10 rules for engagement for structural firefighting and how complacency and inattention lead to fire personnel becoming statistics. We will cover LODD and injury statistics and bring them down to the street level. The class fully examines unintended consequences of unsafe action and the need for better supervision and accountability. The goal: "Get 'em in safe, work 'em safe, get 'em out safe."
