Previous exposure to Technician Level breaching, breaking, shoring, and machinery operations for Structural Collapse.
This training includes hands-on breaching, breaking, lifting, and moving heavy objects, with an emphasis on steel-reinforced concrete, and hazards associated with breaching and breaking, structure stabilization, safety zones, advanced tool kit. Tools include Stanley hydraulic tools, Paratech Rescue struts, and Bobcat machinery. The objectives for this class are shoring, breaching, and safe-operating practices in and around a true heavy rescue environment. PPE for Structural Collapse Rescue required is a hard hat, gloves, eye protection, ear protection, long-sleeve shirt or coat, and steel-toe boots.
Bill Schneider is a 23-year veteran of the Olathe Fire Department. He is technical rescue coordinator for the Special Operations Group that oversees $3 million worth of fire and rescue apparatus, equipment and personnel. He has certifications as a Hazmat Technician, Kansas EMT, and is an IFSAC Structural Collapse Technician certified instructor for the University of Kansas. He responded to the Greensburg tornado rescue and recovery in 2007. In 2005, he was assigned as fire/police liaison on the Incident Management Team based in Biloxi, Mississippi (Hurricanes Katrina and Rita). He also spent five years as a rescue-team manager on MOTF-1.
