*Prerequisites*
There are no specific prerequisite courses for this class, as it will be a hands-on introduction to the specialized equipment used by the Technical Search Specialist during reconnaissance/search.
This class is an introduction to visual and audio search equipment, orientation to GPS and its use during reconnaissance/search, and basic site-map usage. All activities will have a hands-on component, in and around a true rescue environment, to allow participants to understand the concepts involved when utilizing this equipment. Safe operating practices will also be emphasized. Participants are encouraged to bring their own specialized equipment, if they desire, but it is not required. PPE required will be hard hat, eye protection, gloves, pants and steel-toe boots. Long-sleeve shirt recommended.
This training will include hands-on working with Operational Canines Certified in Area and Disaster SAR. Participants will have a better understanding of how canines work different areas of a disaster, including rubble pile and the surrounding area. Participants will also take part in three scenarios with the canines: Area, Building and Rubble Pile searches gaining first-hand experience of how each canine works. Safety equipment is required: PPE includes helmet, eye protection, steel-toe boots, knee pads, and long-sleeve shirt (for rubble pile).
Joey Heideman has been a firefighter/paramedic for the Olathe Fire Department for four years. He is also a member of the Special Operations Group specializing in hazardous materials and technical search. Heideman is a certified Kansas paramedic, hazardous materials technician and an IFSAC building-collapse rescue technician.
Annette Gaston is the director of Kansas Search and Rescue Dog Association. She has 11 years of experience in SAR and is a retired paramedic with 29 years of experience in emergency services. She has certificates as a Kansas Paramedic; NASAR SARTECH II, Canine SARTECH I Area & Trailing, Disaster, and HRD (land & water); Inland SAR School; and Rescue Systems I. She is also a NASAR Evaluator for SARTECH II and Canine SARTECH Area Search (III, II, I), Tracking/Trailing (III, II, I), Disaster, and HRD (land & water). Her canine disaster experience includes deployments to tornadoes in Parsons, Hoisington, Kansas City, Kansas, Greensburg, and Chapman as well as the Emporia Turnpike Flood.
