KU Medical Center Continuing Education joins its sister units, the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute, to help prepare Kansas’ health and first-response professionals to safely and appropriately respond to public health emergencies or terrorist incidents.
In partnership with Kansas Department of Health and Environment, we met with hundreds of health professionals and emergency medical services personnel to learn what training and information they need to better prepare for a major event. The number one need identified was understanding who is responsible for what during a health emergency or crisis. Coordinated planning, communication, and collaboration are essential in mounting an effective response.
We developed and are offering statewide, grant-funded programs to address identified needs. Topics include:
International, state, and agency-specific conferences provide a broad perspective on terrorism; profession-specific courses drill down on individual topics of interest to health and first-response personnel. Many of our programs, which are accredited for a variety of professions, encourage attendance from multidisciplinary audiences to promote interagency and interprofessional communication across the disciplines.
Under the aegis of a Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) grant received in October 2003, we have offered 50 programs across the state to 3,500 people. In spring 2005 we will concentrate on case-based presentations and table-top simulations plus a continuation of medical grand rounds for physicians and nurses and a variety of other profession-specific short presentations.
In spring 2005, we join forces with the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute on its Annual Response to Terrorism Conference, which attracts a large multidisciplinary audience.
A full-scale mass-casualty simulation in September 2005 will feature three days of intense training across six training tracks followed by a real-time overnight deployment on a live collapse site that will require a coordinated, interdisciplinary response by first responders and health professionals.
