Dear Alums:
Welcome back! I know your inbox is stuffed with messages, but hopefully you’ll find time to check on these resources:
- Learn Chinese beginning in September at a convenient time and price!
On weekday nights, the Confucius Institute is offering classes located at KU’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park and also at the Lawrence High School in Lawrence, KS. See http://www.confucius.ku.edu/language_classes.shtml or contact ciku@ku.edu for details.
On Saturday mornings, Gary Hart (2004 alum) will offer language and culture classes at the Survival Chinese Language and Culture School in Kansas City, Missouri. Email Gary at Hart4China@aol.com or call (816)519-2092 for more information. Classes fill up fast so don't delay. - Alums from the Spring 2004 seminar will remember our engaging and knowledgeable speaker, Dr. Livia Kohn who is Professor of Asian religions at Boston University. Livia is now offering her courses on Chinese religion and healing online, a great professional development opportunity for educators. For course description and enrollment information see: http://www.bu.edu/online/online_programs/certificate_programs/asian_religions_healing.html.
- Kathi Fisher (2005 alum) who signed up for the Creative Connections multi-media project on China that I publicized last spring, has received permission for KCTA alums to view it once more. You won't want to miss these photos of Beijing, Xi'an Shanghia, Qingdao and other cities. See: http://www.ccproject.org/china/culturalprofiles/preview.htm . (THANKS KATHI!)
- Bianca Elliot (2005 alum) recommends http://user.bahnhof.se/~secutor/ukiyo-e/edonoiki.html for woodblock prints from 18-19th century Japan as visual primary sources. (THANKS BIANCA!)
- Kathy Nalivaiko (2005 alum) says "Twilight Samurai," a Japanese film with English subtitles about a lesser samurai and his family during the late Edo period is great for middle school students on up. The story is told from the point of view of the samurai's young daughter. (THANKS KATHY!)
- Need visual for PowerPoints and other graphic applications? See http://www.lib.ku.edu/imagegateway/index.cfm?page=bySubject&bsid=1 for an annotated list of many visual sites that are open to the public.
- Want to know more about the Mongols? See: http://www.mongolianculture.com/mhistory.html for annotated links to information on a variety of topics including Marco Polo and the Mongols, and the Monkey King.
- Want cool satellite photos, tables, figures and maps of China? See "The China-Profile: Facts, Figures, and Analyses" at http://www.china-profile.com.
