Independent Study does not award financial aid. If you are enrolled in semester-based courses at KU or another college or university, check with your financial aid office to see if aid is available.
KU staff, members of the Armed Forces, military veterans and their dependents, and Kansans with disabilities may be eligible for the following types of financial support:
KU staff, affiliated members, and graduate assistants are generally eligible for reduced fees. Call (785) 864-7886 for information.
DANTES (The Defense Activity for Nontraditional Educational Support) program has approved KU Independent Study courses. If you are a member of the Armed Forces, talk to your education officer or nearest Education Center about enrollment procedures.
United States armed forces veterans and their dependents may be eligible for Veterans Administration assistance in financing Independent Study programs. Apply for such benefits before enrolling with Independent Study. In Kansas, the V.A. Center's number is (800) 827-1000.
At enrollment, pay fees directly to the Independent Study Student Services office and submit the V.A.'s Certificate of Eligibility for endorsement. We will forward it to the V.A. Center. The Veterans Administration subsequently grants financial aid following its regulations.
Kansans of employable age who are unemployed because of disability may be eligible for financial benefits to pay for Independent Study. Send inquiries to Rehabilitation Services, 3640 S.W. Topeka Blvd., Suite 150, Topeka, KS 66611, or call (785) 267-5301.
