Book I, lines 1-64

Writing Assignment

1. After reading lines 1-64 aloud, translate them in writing into good English.

2. Briefly identify all the proper names mentioned (e.g., Troy, city in Asia Minor, scene of the Trojan War; Juno, wife of Jupiter; etc.).

  1. In the first sentence, what five leading points of the poem are emphasized?
  2. In line 22, what is the significance of sic volvere Parcas?

4. Study the notes carefully for the form and use of the following:

  1. line 2, fato (What does this word tell you about the role of Aeneas? Comment on its position in the line.)
  2. line 4, superum
  3. line 5, conderet
  4. line 10, pietate (What does this word really mean? Watch it and corresponding adjective, pius, in your translation.)
  5. line 10, adire (Is this the usual form after impulerit?)
  6. line 33--What word in this line repeats the keynote idea expressed in the opening passage? (This is a good place to read the story of the Trojan War if you have not already done so.)
  7. line 61, molem et montis (What is the figure of speech?)
