KU Medical Center Continuing Education works in close affiliation with the KU Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) in Pittsburg, Hays, and Garden City.
The Area Health Education Centers help KU Medical Center extend its reach to health professionals and citizens across the state. They offer a variety of programs, continuing education, and services to health professionals and others in their respective service areas.
Through the Kansas State Board of Nursing the AHECs are accredited to provide continuing nursing education. Under KUMC Continuing Education's providership, they are also nationally accredited continuing medical education providers.
The AHECs and KUMC Continuing Education collaborate to conduct statewide needs assessments of physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. These assessments help determine topics of priority concern and ensure that programs are relevant, timely, and practical. Faculty from KUMC and Kansas physicians and nurses serve as faculty for these programs.
The AHECs play a vital role in public health emergency and terrorism-response initiatives. In affiliation with KUMC Continuing Education, the AHECs conduct focus groups of health professionals and first responders to determine training and information needed to respond safely and effectively to public health emergencies and to emerging infections or terrorist incidents. Assessment results inform the content of various programs offered across the state.
