Course Director
James D. Kindscher, MD, Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
Overview
Participants will learn the latest approaches to a broad variety of anesthesia-related issues facing the busy clinician in everyday practice. The symposium will present topics on the anesthetic management of pediatrics, obstetrics, elderly, obesity, brain injury, pulmonary hypertension and neurosurgery. In addition, participants will hear of the latest techniques for transfusion therapy, neurologic monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography and perioperative medication management. These topics have been selected from participants' responses from previous symposia, literature reviews and interaction with experts in anesthesiology.
Target Audience
This symposium is designed for anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and critical care nurses.
Objectives
At the completion of this symposium, participants should be able to (within their scope of practice):
- Review the incidence and impact related to the under-treatment of chronic pain in the elderly.
- Apply key recommendations from the multidisciplinary panel of experts’ consensus guidelines for the management of PONV.
- Identify procedures that reduce the need for transfusion.
- Analyze complications associated with TEE.
- Employ intra-operative techniques to reduce morbidities in obese patients undergoing surgery.
- Apply the principles of management of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients in the operative and interventional suite.
- Identify why "healthy" pediatric patients have intra-operative complications.
- Describe the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension.
- Review ongoing studies and emerging modalities for cardiac evaluation.
- Utilize a comprehensive treatment approach for chronic headache disorders.
- Identify the major components of a malpractice action from the initial letter of intent through the appeals process.
- Utilize risk identification and analysis to reduce the risk of an occurrence or reoccurrence of a potentially compensable event (PCE).
- Apply new developments in the management of low back pain.
- Identify the effect of secondary physiological insult and develop management strategies to minimize adverse effects of anesthesia for non-neurosurgical procedures involving brain injury.
- Review available monitoring technologies that may be used for spinal surgery and examine vulnerabilities to anesthetic agents.
- Apply updated practice in pediatric anesthesia.
- Differentiate practice controversies and evaluate their supporting evidence.
- Recognize the causes of maternal morbidity and mortality related to anesthesia.
- Integrate recent nurse workplace environment research and best practices into an action plan for creating excellence in nursing work units.
