Overview

Participants will be presented the latest updates and current practices on a broad variety of anesthesia topics. This 62nd annual symposium will present issues that face the busy clinician in everyday practice and provide guidance and confidence as you take on these challenges.

This year we will cover topics including:

  • obstetric anesthesia
  • positioning problems
  • pediatric predicaments
  • cardiac anesthesia
  • neuroanesthesia
  • the value of history in relevance to today's practice
  • the question of whether anesthesia is neurotoxic
  • goal-directed hemodynamic management
  • future trends in anesthesia

Also again this year, participants will have the opportunity to participate in a pain specialty breakout session conducted by recognized leaders in the field of pain management:  James Rathmell, MD (Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School) and the faculty of Kansas University Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pain Management. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to learn from a specialty breakout session focused on topics specific to the CRNA provider. Finally, attendees will have numerous opportunities to participate in small group problem-based learning discussions on a wide variety of anesthesia topics led by experts at the tables.

Target Audience

This symposium is designed for anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists.

Slide availability

This is a green conference. In order to save valuable resources, we are using an electronic format for the distribution of slides. Presentations will be available in PDF format the week before the conference online. Thank you for considering the environment.

Objectives

At the completion of this symposium, participants should be able to (within their scope of practice):

  1. Apply the knowledge of pharmacologic interaction and patient safety as one provides anesthesia care for the patient suspected of illicit drug use.
  2. Synthesize a care plan for optimization of hemodynamics in critically ill patients.
  3. Describe, synthesize and employ recent changes and trends in their obstetric anesthesia practice.
  4. Evaluate and integrate different modalities and mechanisms estimating intravascular volume status in patients and make adjustments accordingly.
  5. Appreciate the history of anesthesia practice and how knowledge once gained can be applied to today’s practice.
  6. Adapt into your practice the current concepts in recognition, pathogenesis and treatment of post-dural puncture headaches.
  7. Explore the impact of future technology on patient safety and integrate these concepts into your practice.
  8. Review the concepts and apply the updates of intraoperative blood pressure management and impact on cerebral blood flow and autoregulation.
  9. Identify the risk factors of acute kidney injury in the setting of patients undergoing cardiac surgery and what preventive mechanisms may be useful.
  10. Apply a change in your practice, appreciating the impact of patient positioning, focus on their safety and avoiding additional injury.
  11. Employ the latest understanding of postoperative cognitive dysfunction into your practice in terms of counseling patients and tailoring the anesthetic plan.
  12. Look critically at the practice of chronic pain, identifying what works and which patients may benefit from a multimodal, multidisciplinary therapy.
  13. Apply updated, contemporary applications in everyday practice following roundtable discussions with experts and peers.
  14. Describe the unique practice parameters impacting certified nurse anesthetists, including the role of advanced degrees.
  15. Utilize the information presented regarding cardiac pacing devices and implications for anesthesia and surgery.
  16. Describe and engage in a discussion regarding the potential implications of neurotoxicity and anesthetic agents and formulate a model suitable to your practice.
  17. Analyze and form an opinion regarding the benefits of parents accompanying their children to the operating room.
  18. Review the peculiarities and specific concerns regarding anesthesia and robotic-assisted surgeries.
