Sponsored by the Division of Hematology/Oncology and University of Kansas Medical Center Continuing Education

The goal of this symposium is to disseminate key practice-changing information presented during the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium. In order to promote current professional education and facilitate the delivery of high-quality care to cancer patients, discussion will focus on relevant data regarding the integration of new cancer management strategies into clinical practice. Cancer types to be addressed include: colorectal; esophageal; stomach; pancreatic; hepatobiliary; neuroendocrine; and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Advances in translational medicine and novel agents in clinical development will also be reviewed. Late-breaking data will be made reachable to practicing cancer-care providers. Through didactic and question-and-answer sessions, faculty will communicate to cancer-care providers the most current information pertaining to their specializations.

Target Audience

This educational program is designed for:

  • medical oncologists
  • radiation oncologists
  • surgical oncologists
  • colorectal surgeons
  • gastroenterologists
  • pathologists
  • radiologists
  • internal medicine and primary care physicians
  • basic scientists
  • nurses
  • pharmacists
  • other medical professionals involved in the care and research investigations of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies

Objectives

At the completion of this symposium, participants should be able to:

  • identify newly recognized promising agents that target novel molecular pathways (including new anti-VEGF and VEGFR, IGFR, c-Met, mTOR, and PI3KCa inhibitors; angiopoietin; death pathway agonists; and newer multi-targeted agents for treating patients with colorectal cancer; and esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, small bowel, neuroendocrine, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
  • compare and contrast innovative approaches and the latest tools available in the selection of patients appropriate for adjuvant therapy in colorectal cancer.
  • identify the multimodality approach in the treatment of patients with colorectal cancers.
  • personalize patient care by evaluating new information regarding the use of chemotherapy and targeted agents with molecular guidance in the treatment of colorectal cancer.
  • recognize new molecular markers with prognostic and predictive importance in esophageal and gastric cancer.
  • examine these molecular markers in designing therapeutic strategies in esophageal and gastric cancers.
  • debate the pros and cons of neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer patients.
  • evaluate the latest results of clinical trials regarding the use of systemic (chemotherapy and targeted agents) and loco-regional therapy for liver, biliary-tract and pancreatic malignancies.
  • debate the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Acknowledgments

Financial contributions and supporters of this program will be acknowledged in print at the symposium.
