There is perhaps no better pundit than Tim Porter-O’Grady to enlighten us on emerging and interacting forces shaping healthcare opportunities, choices and changes. A leader in healthcare for nearly 40 years, Porter-O’Grady has held roles from staff nurse to senior executive in a variety of healthcare settings. He is noted for his work on shared governance models, clinical leadership, conflict and innovation.
Tim has published extensively in healthcare with over 165 refereed journal articles and 17 books, and he is a six-time winner of the AJN Healthcare Book of the Year Award. His most recent books in 2009 include Interdisciplinary Shared Governance: Integrating Practice, Transforming Health Care (2nd ed.) and The Quantum Leader: Applications for the New World of Work with co-author Kathy Malloch.
Porter-O’Grady has consulted internationally with over 500 institutions and has lectured in over 1,000 international settings. He has held offices in professional associations and national and community boards, such as vice chair of the governing board of Catholic Health East, governor of Sigma Theta Tau International, president of AID Atlanta and the Georgia Nurse’s Foundation.
Tim is currently senior partner of an international healthcare consulting firm in Atlanta specializing in health futures, organizational innovation, conflict and change, as well as health service delivery models. He is associate professor and leadership scholar at Arizona State University, Program in Healthcare Innovation; 2007 visiting scholar at University of Maryland, and is an adjunct professor at Lakehead University, School of Public Health, Ontario.
Dr. Porter-O'Grady holds graduate degrees in clinical leadership, two doctorates–one in learning behavior and a second in organizational and systems leadership. In addition, he received a doctor of science degree, honoris causa, from the Medical University of Ohio. He has done postdoctoral work in aging and is board-certified in advanced practice in gerontology. He is also certified by the Georgia Supreme Court’s Office of Dispute Resolution as a registered mediator and arbitrator.
