Paul Laybourne Symposium on Child Psychiatry 2009

This symposium will provide current information on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. Dr. Eric Youngstrom will describe the typical presentation of bipolar disorder in youth, identifying those symptoms that are most helpful for diagnosis and reviewing methods for evidence-based assessments to facilitate diagnostic accuracy. In addition, Dr. Youngstrom will describe effective psychotherapy treatment for children and adolescents with bipolar disorder. Dr. Mani Pavuluri will provide an overview of the neurobiology of bipolar disorder, including neuroimaging and neurocognitive studies and a discussion of the translational application of this research into treatment for the disorder in children and adolescents. Dr. Robert Kowatch will outline evidence-based medication strategies to treat children and adolescents with symptoms of bipolar disorder.
This symposium is intended for psychiatrists, pediatricians, psychologists, nurses, social workers and other clinicians participating in mental health care for children and adolescents. The symposium also welcomes students and trainees in the above fields.
