TeamSTEPPS® Fundamentals — Thursday, October 20, 2011

TeamSTEPPS® Fundamentals is an interactive workshop that focuses on improving core team functioning through lectures, role-playing, exercises and mini-case studies.

TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer — Thursday–Friday, October 20–21, 2011

For instructors wanting to facilitate a TeamSTEPPS™ initiative at their institutions, the two-day Master Trainer interactive workshop will provide additional training and coaching skills through didactic, role-play and "teach back" exercises.

Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to train individuals to develop the necessary expertise to use the TeamSTEPPS® fundamentals in their institutions and to train master trainers with the necessary expertise to return to their institutions to develop teams using the TeamSTEPPS® evidence-based approach to teamwork and communication.

Target Audience

This program is designed for healthcare professionals who want to influence quality healthcare delivery and systems improvements, including hospitals, social services, ambulatory care and community and business organizations.

Objectives

At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

Day One – TeamSTEPPS® Fundamentals & Master Trainer

  • Describe the impact of medical error and the importance of communication and teamwork in preventing error.
  • Evaluate the TeamSTEPPS® framework for improving communication and teamwork and for preventing medical error.
  • Demonstrate team leadership, communication, situational awareness and mutual support tools and skills.
  • Develop a plan to improve team core competencies.

Day Two – TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer

  • Identify strategies to implement and sustain TeamSTEPPS® methods in their organization.
  • Practice TeamSTEPPS® methods, such as "teach backs" and coaching, while obtaining direct faculty feedback.
  • Use the TeamSTEPPS® framework to improve teamwork in their institution.
