KU OMA Office and Kansas Union, Lawrence, Kan.
Join us for the second annual Community College Multicultural Leadership Symposium, to be held at the Kansas Union on the University of Kansas campus. It is sponsored by the KU offices of The Provost, Diversity and Equity, Admissions and Scholarships, Financial Aid, Housing, Multicultural Affairs, Student Involvement & Leadership Center and Continuing Education. KU welcomes community college students from underrepresented populations who are considering transferring to a four-year university. A 2.5 grade-point average is recommended for participation.
Highlights include: Tuesday: evening pizza reception; Wednesday: Academic Interest Meetings (AIMs) with faculty/staff organized by major or area of interest, leadership workshops, lunch with student mentors, student panel about life at KU, transfer information session, panel discussions about housing, financial aid, advising, and student involvement on campus. The Symposium includes a campus tour.
Last year more than 40 students and several advisors from Garden City Community College, Haskell Indian Nations University, and Kansas City Kansas Community College participated. In addition to a pizza party for overnight participants, students spent a full day attending panel discussions, interactive presentations, and advising sessions in their academic areas of interest.
Participants at the 2009 Multicultural Leadership Symposium
Activities included: AIMS (Academic Interest Meetings); faculty and staff information panel with staff from Housing, Financial Aid, Admissions, Advising, and academic departments; workshop on student leadership; presentation on preparing to transfer; student panel on life at KU; and a campus tour led by the multicultural recruitment team and student leaders.
As Fred Rodriguez, Interim Associate Vice Provost for Diversity and Equity, has commented, "The symposium is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the university and its varied programs, but equally important are the connections and relationships we are building with such an important segment of the educational system in the state of Kansas—our community colleges."
