Class Text

Title: Cost Reduction and Optimization for Industrial and Manufacturing Companies
Author: Joseph Berk
Publisher: Wiley and Scrivener Publishing
ISBN: 978-0-470-609576

Certificate Requirements

The certificate is awarded after the completion of any three modules, including all quizzes and final exams. The participants must attain a minimum of 65 percent for each module and an aggregate average of at least 75 percent in the program. This course is comparable to three days of seminar training. Therefore, the certificate will state that the recipient has earned 2.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or 24 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). However, the course does not carry any college credits and cannot be used as part of a degree seeking program.

Grading

The grade will be based upon quizzes and the final exam, all of which are offered online as part of the course material, done with an “open-book” approach. The quizzes and exams are based on material presented during the course and derived from the actual work experience of the instructor.

Quizzes

  • There are 6 quizzes (one per session).
  • There is an unlimited time within a module delivery time for the students to submit a quiz. However, quizzes must be done before their corresponding final exam.
  • Students are allowed ONLY ONE attempt to answer each question.

Final Exams

  • There is a 14-day window for the students to submit the final exam. This window will open for 14 days starting at the last online session of the.
  • Students are allowed ONLY ONE attempt to answer each question.

Missed Final Exams

If you have a valid doctor's note, you may reschedule a missed final exam.

Course Delivery

Each class is delivered as a live webinar on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. All webinars are recorded so attendees can view classes they miss or review the material at their leisure. Class handouts and quizzes are available on a separate University of Kansas website. Attendees will receive an ID and password to enter the site. Any computer with an internet browser capable of running Flash will be sufficient for the program. In addition, there are apps available for Apple iOS and Android devices, which can be used for webinar portion.

Study material consists of:

  • The assigned chapter(s) from the books, and
  • The assigned online notes for a particular session.

Each section has reading material (the assigned notes) followed by a quiz.

Students should read the corresponding chapter in the textbook and the assigned online notes BEFORE the online session. During the 60-minute online session (every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 7 p.m. Eastern Time) that section/chapter will be discussed and all questions answered. The online session IS NOT a substitute for reviewing the assigned materials as it will not be possible to cover all the session's material in a 60-minute tutorial.

Instructor Availability

During the online session, post any questions on Blackboard. All answers will also be posted on Blackboard (this ensures that all students are able to benefit from questions and answers, just like in a traditional classroom). Note that during an online session, and unlike a traditional classroom, Blackboard allows a student to ask a confidential question to the instructor and get a confidential answer back.

Outside the online session, use e-mail. The instructor will reply within 2 business days.
