Dr. Jose A. Bravo de Rueda was born in Lima, Perú. His BA is from Universidad Católica de Lima, Perú. In Peru, he taught at both high school and college levels. He received his MA in Spanish from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1994 and his PhD in Spanish in 1997. During these years he was a regular contributor to Latino newspapers in the Washington, DC, area. He has been on the faculty of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University since August 1995 and is now an associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages.
Dr. Bravo de Rueda is actively involved with the Latino community of the Piedmont Triad. He is the chairperson of the Guilford County Health Department Hispanic Advisory Committee, an organization that advises the Guilford County Health Department on how to better service the growing Latino community. He also cooperates with the School of Agriculture and Environmental and Allied Sciences translating brochures and leaflets into Spanish. These translations benefit the Spanish-speaking community. His latest translation includes informative brochures on how to eat healthy, as part of the project "Eat Right. Add to Life." Other translations include "How to Prevent Skin Cancer" and "Hand Signals for Farm Workers."
Dr. Bravo de Rueda's latest publications include entries on Roberto Arlt and Enrique Fairlie Fuentes in the volume Latin American Mystery Writers: An A-to-Z Guide, edited by Darrell Lockhart, Greenwood Press, 2004; and also entries on José Adolph, Eugenio Alarco, Leopoldo Lugones, and Horacio Quiroga in the volume Latin American Science Fiction Writers: An A-to-Z Guide, edited by Darrell Lockhart, Greenwood Press, 2004. Bravo de Rueda is also featured in this volume.
One of his short stories is included in the volume Nuevas Voces Hispanas ("New Hispanic Voices"), Prentice Hall, 2000; pp.109-26. In addition to the short story, this volume includes an interview with Dr. Bravo de Rueda. He has also published a novel Hacia el Sur ("Southward"), La Yapa, 1992, and a short story collection El hombre de la máscara ("The Man in the Mask"), APJP, 1994.
